Thanksgiving is a special holiday. It is a time for family, friends, and for giving thanks. The very first Thanksgiving was a celebration of the Pilgrims’ first harvest over 300 years ago. Would you like to learn more?
The Pilgrims left England in 1620 on a ship named the Mayflower. There were over 100 passengers on board looking for religious freedom and promise of a better life in the New World.
Miles Standish was a great and fearless leader of the Pilgrims. When the Mayflower landed on Plymouth Rock, he set out with some men to explore the land first. It took one whole month for the men to return.
Plymouth was named for the English harbor where the Mayflower sailed from. The first colony was built here.
The Pilgrims lived in peace with the Wampanoag Indians who already lived in the New World. Squanto was a special friend who taught them how to hunt, fish, and plant food. He helped them to survive the brutal winter.
The Pilgrims decided to have a feast and give thanks for the plentiful harvest that was to feed them during the harsh winter. Everyone helped prepare food, turkey, corn, and many other traditional dishes we still eat today.
Thanksgiving is a time for families to sit and feast remembering the first harvest. Most of all we give thanks for our good friends, family, and our good fortune.
Happy Thanksgiving! |
